When speaking to supervisors, clients, or colleagues you do not know well, address them as "Pan" (for men) or "Pani" (for women) combined with the third-person verb form (for example: "Czy Pan może to podpisać?" — Could you sign this?). Switching to the informal "Ty" (you) usually happens only when proposed by the senior colleague or agreed mutually ("przejdźmy na ty").

Direct commands in Polish can easily sound demanding or aggressive. Instead of a blunt imperative like "Daj mi to!" (Give me that!), native speakers use polite constructions with "proszę" + infinitive ("Proszę mi podać narzędzia" — Please pass me the tools) or conditional phrasing ("Czy mógłby Pan sprawdzić ten raport?" — Could you check this report?).

Understanding Your Contract

Umowa o pracę is a full employment contract with paid leave, sick pay, and a legal notice period. Umowa zlecenie is more flexible but gives fewer protections. Umowa o dzieło covers a single deliverable and usually has no ZUS social contributions at all — do not sign one if you expect regular ongoing work.

False Friends: Polish Words That Trick Russian and Ukrainian Speakers

• "zapomnieć" means "to forget" — the opposite of what it sounds like to Russian and Ukrainian ears (запомнить / запам'ятати, "to remember"). If you forgot something, you say "zapomniałem," not the other way round.
• "wygodny" means "comfortable," not "profitable" — Russian and Ukrainian speakers often expect it to mean выгодный / вигідний. "Profitable" in Polish is "opłacalny."
• "dywan" means "carpet" or "rug," not "sofa" — a sofa in Polish is "kanapa."
• "czas" means "time" in general, not specifically "hour" — even though it sounds like the Ukrainian "час." The Polish word for "hour" is "godzina."

• "Odpowiedzialny za": Used to describe key job duties ("Jestem odpowiedzialny za odbiór dostaw" — I am responsible for receiving deliveries), followed by the preposition "za" + accusative.
• "Dokładny" vs "Dodatkowy": "Dokładny" means precise, thorough, or exact ("dokładny pomiar" = exact measurement). If you mean extra or additional, use "dodatkowy" ("dodatkowe godziny" = overtime hours).
