The Passive Voice (Periphrastic & Reflexive) in Czech

In Czech, the *Passive Voice (Trpný rod / Pasivum)* shifts the thematic focus from the agent to the patient through two distinct grammatical constructions:

Periphrastic Passive (Opisné pasivum: být + příčestí trpné): Constructed with the auxiliary být (conjugated in any tense) combined with the Passive Participle (Příčestí trpné: -n, -t) agreeing in gender and number with the subject: - Masc. sg.: Dům byl postaven v minulém roce. (The house was built last year). - Fem. sg.: Kniha byla napsána slavným autorem. (The book was written by a famous author). - Neuter sg.: Rozhodnutí bylo schváleno. Extremely common in everyday Czech, announcements, recipes, and rules when the agent is anonymous, general, or irrelevant: - Tento časopis se prodává všude.
