German Adjectives as Nouns

Nominalized adjectives (nominalisierte Adjektive) are adjectives in German that are grammatically converted into nouns to represent people, abstract concepts, or things. While they are written with a capital letter and function as nouns in a sentence, they strictly retain their original adjective declension endings according to the surrounding articles.

To form a nominalized adjective, capitalize the adjective and apply the regular declension rules. For masculine and feminine nouns representing people, the ending depends on the preceding article (e.g., der Deutsche - the German man, eine Deutsche - a German woman, die Deutschen - the Germans). Abstract neuter nouns representing concepts are preceded by words like etwas, nichts, viel, or wenig and take strong endings (e.g., etwas Neues - something new, nichts Gutes - nothing good).

A common mistake is declining capitalized nominalized adjectives like regular nouns (e.g., writing der Beamte -> dem Beamte in the dative instead of the correct dem Beamten). Another frequent error is using incorrect endings after abstract words (e.g., writing viel Interessante instead of the correct viel Interessantes).
