German Question Words (W-Questions)

German question words are often referred to as 'W-Fragen' because almost all of them begin with the letter 'W'. These words are used to request specific information, resulting in open-ended questions rather than simple yes or no answers. Basic question words include 'wer' (who), 'was' (what), 'wo' (where), 'wann' (when), 'warum' (why), and 'wie' (how). Using these words is the basis for most social and professional communication.

Additionally, German distinguishes directions with specific forms like 'wohin' (where to) and 'woher' (where from), which is very different from English. Some question words, like 'wer', must be declined based on the grammatical case they represent (e.g. 'wen' for accusative, 'wem' for dative). Learning to decline these question words correctly is a core element of forming proper sentences and responding accurately.
