The Konjunktiv II in German

The Subjunctive II (Konjunktiv II) is the grammatical mood used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, dreams, polite requests, and conditions contrary to fact. It corresponds to the English conditional construction using "would" or "were" (e.g., "If I were rich, I would buy a house"). It allows speakers to soften their tone, making requests sound much more polite and diplomatic.

For most verbs, the Konjunktiv II is formed using the conjugated subjunctive auxiliary würde (would) + the infinitive of the main verb at the end of the sentence (e.g., ich würde gehen). However, high-frequency verbs, such as auxiliary verbs (sein -> wäre, haben -> hätte) and modal verbs (können -> könnte, müssen -> müsste), form the Konjunktiv II directly by adding an umlaut to their simple past stem.

Use Konjunktiv II for conditional clauses (usually starting with wenn), polite wishes (e.g., Ich hätte gerne einen Kaffee), or polite questions (e.g., Könnten Sie mir helfen?). A typical learner mistake is combining würde with verbs that should be conjugated directly, such as saying ich würde haben instead of the correct ich hätte, which sounds unnatural in German. Another error is forgetting to move the infinitive to the end of the clause.
