German Word Order: TeKaMoLo Rule
TeKaMoLo
A rule determining the order of adverbial expressions: Temporal, Causal, Modal, Local.
In German grammar, when a sentence contains multiple adverbial expressions, their order is not arbitrary. The TeKaMoLo rule is a highly consistent grammatical guide that determines the sequence of these details. Te stands for Temporal (answering 'when'), Ka stands for Kausal (answering 'why'), Mo stands for Modal (answering 'how'), and Lo stands for Lokal (answering 'where'). Following this exact sequence helps language learners construct natural-sounding sentences and avoids common syntax mistakes.
While native German speakers might occasionally shift elements to emphasize a specific detail or emotion, the TeKaMoLo structure remains the standard neutral word order. It applies to both main clauses and subordinate clauses across all proficiency levels. Mastering this rule is key to achieving natural fluency in both written assignments and daily spoken conversations, making it one of the most practical guidelines for non-native students.
