They express whether actions occur simultaneously (wenn, als, während, solange), sequentially (nachdem, sobald), or represent boundaries (bis, seitdem, ehe).

The grammar rules for temporal conjunctions dictate that they introduce a subordinate clause, meaning the conjugated verb must be placed at the very end of the clause. A crucial distinction exists between als and wenn: als is used for single, completed events in the past (e.g., als ich ein Kind war), whereas wenn is used for present, future, or repeated past events (e.g., wenn ich Zeit habe, immer wenn ich ihn besuchte).

A common mistake is using wenn instead of als for unique past events (e.g., writing wenn ich nach Berlin umzog instead of als ich nach Berlin umzog). Another frequent error is using incorrect verb tenses with nachdem, which requires the past action to be in a further past tense compared to the main clause (e.g., combining nachdem in Plusquamperfekt with Präteritum in the main clause).
