The Gerund in Spanish (Gerundio)

The gerund (el gerundio) in Spanish is a non-finite verb form that corresponds to the English present participle (-ing form). It is primarily used to express continuous or ongoing actions in progress, usually in combination with the verb 'estar' (e.g., 'Estoy comiendo' - I am eating). It can also function adverbially to describe the manner in which an action is performed (e.g., 'Salió corriendo' - He left running/ran out).

To form the gerundio, you add the suffix '-ando' to the stem of -ar verbs (e.g., hablar becomes hablando), and '-iendo' to the stem of -er and -ir verbs (e.g., comer becomes comiendo). If the stem of an -er or -ir verb ends in a vowel, the ending changes to '-yendo' to avoid having three vowels in a row (e.g., leer becomes leyendo). Some -ir verbs also undergo stem-changes in the gerundio (e.g., decir becomes diciendo, dormir becomes durmiendo).

Crucially, unlike in English, the Spanish gerundio cannot function as a noun or an adjective. You cannot say 'leyendo es bueno' for 'reading is good'; instead, the infinitive must be used ('leer es bueno'). Understanding this distinction is key to avoiding errors.
