Spanish Word Order

Orden de las palabras

Spanish word order is flexible, although Subject-Verb-Object remains the standard.

Spanish offers more syntactical flexibility than English. While Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) is common, Spanish speakers regularly put the verb before the subject, especially in questions or when introducing information.

Examples

Juan lee el periódico.

Juan reads the newspaper.

Ayer llamó tu hermana.

Yesterday your sister called.

¿Qué quiere este niño?

What does this child want?
