The Pretérito Indefinido (Past Simple) is used in Spanish to describe actions that were completed in the past at a definite time. Regular -ar verbs end in -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron, while -er and -ir verbs end in -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron. Irregular verbs in this tense are extremely common and do not take accent marks (e.g., tener -> tuve, hacer -> hice, ir/ser -> fui). It is often accompanied by time markers like "ayer" (yesterday) or "el año pasado" (last year).

Yesterday I spoke with María.
El año pasado fuimos a España.
Last year we went to Spain.
