The Past Conditional (Condizionale passato) in Italian

In Italian grammar, the *Past Conditional (Condizionale passato / composto) is constructed using the present conditional of essere or avere + the past participle (participio passato)*:

1. Structural Formula: Auxiliary in Condizionale Presente (avrei / sarei) + Past Participle - With Avere: avrei fatto, avresti fatto, avrebbe fatto, avremmo fatto, avreste fatto, avrebbero fatto - With Essere: sarei andato/a, saresti andato/a, sarebbe andato/a, saremmo andati/e, sareste andati/e, sarebbero andati/e.

2. Core Function 1: Unfulfilled Past Intention / Counterfactual Possibility: Expresses an action that someone wished to perform or could have occurred in the past, but ultimately did not happen (Azione non realizzata nel passato): - Ieri sarei venuto volentieri alla tua festa, ma ho avuto un imprevisto. (I would have gladly come to your party yesterday, but something came up). - *Avrei voluto comprare quel quadro, ma costava troppo.* (I would have liked to buy that painting, but it was too expensive).
