Combined Pronouns in Italian (glielo, me la, te li, ce ne)

In Italian syntax, when an Indirect Object Pronoun and a *Direct Object Pronoun (or the particle ne) co-occur in the same clause, they combine systematically into a two-pronoun cluster known as Combined Pronouns (Pronomi combinati / doppi)*:

*1. Mutation of 1st and 2nd Person Pronouns (-i → -e): The vowel -i of mi, ti, ci, vi changes to -e before lo, la, li, le, ne: - mi → me: me lo, me la, me li, me le, me ne (Me lo dai? = Do you give it to me?) - ti → te: te lo, te la, te li, te le, te ne (Te lo spiego = I explain it to you) - ci → ce: ce lo, ce la, ce li, ce le, ce ne (Ce lo dice = He tells it to us) - vi → ve: ve lo, ve la, ve li, ve le, ve ne (Ve lo mostro* = I show it to you pl.).

*2. Fused 3rd-Person Forms (glielo, gliela, glieli, gliele, gliene): Both masculine gli (to him) and feminine le (to her / formal Le) merge with an intercalary -e- into a single, unified word before direct pronouns: - glielo (it masc. to him/her): Do il libro a Marco/Maria → Glielo do. - gliela (it fem. to him/her): Do la penna a Marco/Maria → Gliela do. - glieli (them masc. to him/her): Glieli porto domani. - gliele (them fem. to him/her): Gliele regalo. - gliene (some/of it to him/her): Gliene parlo stasera.*

3. Past Participle Agreement: In Passato Prossimo, the participle still strictly agrees with the embedded direct pronoun: Questa lettera? Gliel'ho scritta ieri (fem. sg. -a!).
