Subject Pronouns and Pro-Drop (Pronomi personali soggetto)
Italian is a null-subject (pro-drop) language where subject pronouns (io, tu, lui/lei/Lei, noi, voi, loro) are typically omitted unless needed for emphasis, contrast, or politeness.
In Italian syntax, verbs carry unambiguous person and number suffixes in nearly all tenses. Consequently, Italian is a classic *Pro-Drop (Caduta del pronome soggetto) language where Subject Personal Pronouns (Pronomi personali soggetto)* are routinely omitted:
1. The Pronoun Inventory: - 1st sg.: io (I) - 2nd sg.: tu (you informal) - 3rd sg.: lui (he), lei (she), Lei (capitalized: you formal / polite address for both men and women) - 1st pl.: noi (we) - 2nd pl.: voi (you plural informal & formal) - 3rd pl.: loro (they).
(Note: Archaic literary forms egli, ella, esso, essa, essi are virtually never used in spoken Italian today).
2. When Subject Pronouns MUST Be Used: - Contrast & Emphasis: Io studio medicina, mentre lui lavora in banca (I study medicine, while he works in a bank). - Clarification in Subjunctive: Because the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd singular forms of the present subjunctive are identical (che io parli, che tu parli, che lui parli), pronouns are often explicitly retained for clarity. - *Polite Formal Address (Dare del Lei): Used with 3rd-person singular verb: Lei di dov'è, signor Rossi?* (Where are you from, Mr. Rossi?).
Learner Error: Constantly saying Io abito a Roma e io lavoro qui sounds robotic and unidiomatic to native Italian speakers.

I prefer to have a hot cappuccino, while he always has an iced tea.

Mrs. Bianchi, do you wish to participate in tomorrow's international conference?
Vivono a Firenze da molti anni e conoscono perfettamente ogni angolo della città.
They have lived in Florence for many years and know every corner of the city perfectly.
