The Connective/Quotative Particle "to" (と)
と
A multi-functional particle used for joining nouns (meaning "and"), showing companionship ("with"), or marking quotes.
The particle と (to) serves several essential grammatical functions in Japanese. First, it acts as a coordinating conjunction equivalent to "and" in English, but only for linking nouns in a complete, exhaustive list. Second, it functions as a preposition meaning "with" to denote companionship or the partner with whom an action is performed. Finally, it serves as a quotation marker to introduce direct or indirect thoughts and speech.
As with all Japanese particles, と is placed directly after the noun or clause it modifies. When listing nouns exhaustively (e.g., hon to pen - a book and a pen), と is inserted between them. When expressing "with someone," it follows the person (e.g., tomodachi to - with a friend). For quotations, it is placed immediately after the quoted clause, before verbs of thinking or speaking like omou (to think) or iu (to say).
Use と when you want to list everything in a group, state who you did something with, or quote a statement. A common mistake is using と to join verbs or adjectives, which is grammatically incorrect; in Japanese, adjectives and verbs are joined using the te-form instead. Another error is confusing と with other listing particles like や (ya), which is used for incomplete lists where other items are implied.
