Polish Numerals

liczebnik

Polish numerals express quantity or order and decline extensively based on gender, case, and noun types.

Polish numerals (liczebniki) are a complex and highly inflected part of speech. They are divided into cardinal numerals (liczebniki główne, e.g., 'jeden', 'dwa', 'trzy'), which express quantity, and ordinal numerals (liczebniki porządkowe, e.g., 'pierwszy', 'drugi', 'trzeci'), which designate position in a sequence. Both types must agree with the nouns they modify in gender, case, and number.

Cardinal numerals are notoriously challenging because they have multiple gender forms (e.g., 'dwa' for masculine/neuter, 'dwie' for feminine, and 'dwaj' for masculine-personal). Furthermore, numerals from five upwards trigger the genitive plural case of the noun in the nominative and accusative cases (e.g., 'cztery książki' but 'pięć książek'). Ordinal numerals behave grammatically like adjectives and follow standard adjective declension rules (e.g., 'w pierwszym rzędzie'). Polish also features collective numerals (liczebniki zbiorowe, e.g., 'dwoje', 'troje') used for groups of mixed genders, children, or nouns that only exist in the plural.

Mastering numerals is a key milestone for learners. It requires careful practice with gender agreement and case patterns to construct correct everyday sentences.
