The Instrumental Case in Polish
narzędnik (instrumental)
The instrumental case describes instruments, professions, nationalities, or transportation, and follows certain prepositions.
The Instrumental case (Narzędnik) is the fifth grammatical case in Polish. It answers the questions 'kim?' (with whom / as who) and 'czym?' (with what / using what). One of its primary roles is to identify the instrument or means by which an action is performed. For example, 'pisać długopisem' means to write with a pen. It is also used to state someone's profession, role, or nationality after the linking verb 'być' (to be). For instance, in 'Jestem nauczycielem' (I am a teacher), the noun is in the instrumental case.
Additionally, the instrumental case is required after specific prepositions, especially those indicating location or company. These include 'z' (with), 'pod' (under), 'nad' (above / by), 'przed' (before / in front of), 'za' (behind), and 'między' (between). For example, 'idę z bratem' (I go with my brother). The endings for nouns in this case are relatively regular: masculine and neuter singular nouns typically end in '-em', while feminine singular nouns end in '-ą'. Adjectives take '-ym/-im' for masculine/neuter and '-ą' for feminine. It is one of the easiest cases to master due to ending consistency.
