Definite vs. Indefinite Adjective Aspect in Serbian
Definite and Indefinite Adjective Aspect (Vid prideva: dobar vs. dobri)
Qualitative masculine adjectives distinguish indefinite short forms (Kakav? dobar) used predicatively from definite long forms ending in -i (Koji? dobri) used attributively.
In traditional Serbian grammar, masculine qualitative adjectives possess two distinct aspectual states of definiteness: *Indefinite Aspect (Neodređeni vid) and Definite Aspect (Određeni vid)*:
*1. Indefinite Adjective Aspect (Neodređeni vid): - Answers the question Kakav? (What kind of? / What is it like?). - Denotes an unfamiliar, general, or newly introduced quality. - Masculine singular ends in a bare consonant (short form): lep grad (a beautiful city), bistar potok (a clear stream), nov kaput (a new coat), dobar čovek (a good man). - Functions predominantly as a predicate adjective after 'biti': Ovaj čovek je dobar* (This man is good).
*2. Definite Adjective Aspect (Određeni vid): - Answers the question Koji? (Which one specifically?). - Denotes a specific, familiar, previously identified item or intrinsic permanent classification. - Masculine singular ends in a long -i: lepi grad (the specific beautiful city), novi profesor (the new professor), crni hleb (black bread). - Compulsory Definite Contexts: Superlatives (najlepši), demonstratives (ovaj novi), proper geographical terms (Crni humor, Jadransko more), and possessive derivatives in -ov/-ev/-in* are always definite.
Declension Differences: While indefinite adjectives in oblique cases are increasingly replaced by definite endings in colloquial Serbian, formal literary Serbian preserves distinct Genitive forms: dobra čoveka (indef.) vs. dobrog(a) čoveka (def.).
