Indirect Speech & Reported Clauses in Turkish

Turkish constructs Indirect (Reported) Speech (Dolaylı Anlatım) by nominalizing the reported clause using participles or verbal nouns governed by reporting verbs like söylemek (to say), belirtmek (to state), istemek (to want), or sormak (to ask):

1. Reporting Statements (using -DIğInI / -(y)AcAğInI): Direct speech: Ahmet: "Yarın geleceğim" dedi. Indirect speech: Ahmet yarın geleceğini söyledi. (Ahmet said that he would come tomorrow). - Past/Present: Ali hasta olduğunu söyledi (Ali said that he was sick). - Future: Mehmet evi satacağını belirtti (Mehmet stated that he would sell the house). 2. Reporting Commands and Requests (using -mAsInI): Direct command: Doktor: "İlaçları düzenli içiniz" dedi. Indirect command: Doktor ilaçları düzenli içmemi söyledi. (The doctor told me to take the medications regularly). 3. Direct Quotation with 'diye': Turkish also uses the converb diye ('saying / as') to report direct speech without changing internal grammar: "Yarın gelirim" diye düşündüm (I thought to myself, 'I will come tomorrow').

Learners should note that the subject of the reported clause appears in the genitive case (Ahmet'in geleceğini), while the nominalized verb receives the accusative case (-ini / -ını).
