Demonstrative Pronouns and Adjectives (bu, şu, o)

Turkish possesses a fine-grained three-way demonstrative system: bu (this — physically close to the speaker), şu (that — slightly further, or actively pointed out to draw the listener's attention), and o (that over there — distant, or referring to an entity not currently in sight).

These words function both as demonstrative adjectives (when directly modifying a noun without changing: bu araba, şu masa, o bina) and as demonstrative pronouns (when standing alone). When used as pronouns with case suffixes, they always insert the pronominal buffer consonant n: bunu (this, acc.), şuna (to that), ondan (from that). Their plurals are bunlar (these), şunlar (those nearby), and onlar (those far away).

Spatial location words are formed using the same roots: burası / burada (this place / here), şurası / şurada (that place / right there), and orası / orada (that distant place / over there). English speakers frequently confuse şu and o, using o for objects clearly visible right in front of them where şu is naturally required to draw attention.
