Potential Mood & Ability (-ebil / -abil) in Turkish
Potential Mood / Ability (-ebil / -abil)
The potential suffix -(y)Abil expresses physical ability, possibility, or permission; its negative counterpart is -AmA (yapamam = I cannot do).
The Potential Mood (Yeterlilik Fiili) is formed with the compound auxiliary -(y)Abil- (-ebilmek / -abilmek). It corresponds to English 'can, to be able to, may'.
Three distinct communicative functions: 1. Physical or Acquired Ability: Türkçe konuşabiliyorum (I can speak Turkish), Yüzebiliyor (He can swim). 2. Possibility / Probability: Yarın yağmur yağabilir (It might rain tomorrow). 3. Polite Permission / Requests: İçeri girebilir miyim? (May I come in?), Bunu tekrar edebilir misiniz? (Could you repeat this?).
Crucial Asymmetry in Negation: Unlike other Turkish tenses where -me/-ma is added, the negative potential mood drops -bil- and uses -(y)AmA-: - Positive: Yap-abil-ir-im (I can do it) - Negative (Inability / Impossibility): Yap-ama-m (I cannot do it), Gel-eme-di (He could not come), Anla-y-ama-dım (I could not understand). - Negative Possibility ('might not'): Retains -ebil- with -me-: Gel-me-y-ebil-ir (He might not come).
Learners frequently make the mistake of creating forms like yapbilmiyorum instead of the correct negative yapamıyorum.
