Converbs and Gerunds (Zarf-Fiiller / Ulaçlar) in Turkish
Converbs and Gerunds (-erek, -ince, -meden, -ip)
Converbs link clauses and express manner (-erek = by doing), sequence (-ip = and then), time (-ince = when), and negation (-meden = without doing).
Turkish Converbs / Gerunds (Zarf-Fiiller or Ulaçlar) turn subordinate verb stems into adverbials of time, manner, cause, or sequence, eliminating the need for coordinate conjunctions like 'and' or 'when':
1. -(y)Ip (Consecutive / Sequential Action): Connects two closely linked verbs sharing the same tense/person, avoiding repetitive suffixation: Gitti ve aldı → Gid-ip aldı (He went and bought). 2. -(y)ErEk / -(y)ArAk (Manner / 'By doing'): Describes the method or simultaneous background action: Gül-erek konuştu (He spoke smiling / laughingly), Çalış-arak kazandı (He earned by working). 3. -(y)IncA / -(y)IncE (Temporal / 'When / As soon as'): Marks the moment a condition is met: Eve gel-ince beni ara (Call me when you arrive home). 4. -mAdAn / -mEdEn (Negative Adverbial / 'Without doing / Before'): Düşün-meden konuşma (Do not speak without thinking), Evden çık-madan önce (Before leaving the house). 5. -(y)kEn (Simultaneous / 'While'): Invariable clitic meaning 'while doing': Yolda yürür-ken (While walking on the road).
Learners should note that -ip never takes personal suffixes itself; it inherits its tense, mood, and person from the final finite verb of the sentence.
