Reflexive Verbs with -ся (Зворотні дієслова на -ся)
Reflexive verbs end in the particle -ся (or euphonic -сь after vowels), expressing actions directed at oneself, reciprocity, or passive/middle voice.
Reflexive Verbs (зворотні дієслова) in Ukrainian are marked by the postfix -ся or its euphonic variant -сь. Unlike Polish się, which is a separate mobile word, the Ukrainian reflexive marker is permanently suffixed to the end of the verb.
Alternation of -ся and -сь: - After a consonant: Strictly use -ся (вмиваєся*, вчися, сміються). - After a vowel: Usually alternates with -сь for euphony, especially in participles, gerunds, past tense, and 1st person forms: я вмиваюсь (or вмиваюся), ми зустрілись, навчившись*.
Main Semantic Categories: 1. Direct Reflexive (Action on Oneself): вмиватися (to wash oneself), одягатися (to dress oneself), голитися (to shave). 2. Reciprocal (Mutual Action): зустрічатися (to meet each other), вітатися (to greet each other), цілуватися (to kiss each other). 3. Inherent Middle / State: Verbs that only exist with -ся: сміятися (to laugh), сподіватися (to hope), боятися (to be afraid of + genitive), пишатися (to be proud of + instrumental). 4. Impersonal Expressions: Мені здається (It seems to me), Хочеться спати (I feel like sleeping).
Learners should note that in pronunciation, -ться sounds like [ц':а] (вчиться → [вчи́ц':а]), and -шся sounds like [с':а] (вмиваєшся → [вмива́йес':а]).
