The unemployment benefit in Poland, officially known as zasiłek dla bezrobotnych, is a temporary financial assistance program designed to support individuals who have lost their jobs and are actively searching for new employment. To receive this benefit, you must register as an unemployed person at the local labor office (Powiatowy Urząd Pracy). The benefit is funded by the state Labor Fund (Fundusz Pracy) and is intended to provide a basic safety net while you participate in job placement services or training programs.

Not everyone who registers at the Urząd Pracy is automatically eligible for the financial payout. To qualify for the zasiłek, you must prove that you worked and paid social security contributions for at least 365 days within the 18 months preceding your registration. Furthermore, during this employment period, your monthly salary must have been at least equal to the national minimum wage (minimalne wynagrodzenie). Time spent on other contribution-paying activities, such as certain civil contracts or military service, can also count toward this 365-day requirement.

The duration of the benefit is typically 6 or 12 months, depending on the unemployment rate in your district, your total career length, and your family situation. The payout is structured in a two-stage flat rate, where the monthly amount is higher during the first three months and then decreases for the remaining period. For foreign residents in Poland, eligibility depends on their specific residence permit type, as holders of temporary residence cards with work access or permanent residence cards generally have the right to register and claim benefits.
