Nominative Case (1. pád – Nominativ)

The base dictionary form answering Kdo? (Who?) and Co? (What?), marking the grammatical subject of the clause and predicate nominals.

The *Nominative Case (1. pád – Nominativ) is the base, citation form of all Czech nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and numerals as listed in dictionaries. It answers the fundamental question words Kdo? (Who?) for animate referents and Co? (What?*) for inanimate entities.

Syntactic Roles: 1. *Grammatical Subject (Podmět): Identifies the entity performing or experiencing the verbal action: - Student čte zajímavou knihu. (The student reads an interesting book). - Praha je krásné historické město. (Prague is a beautiful historic city). 2. Predicate Nominal (Jmenná část přísudku): Follows copular verbs such as být (to be) or stát se (to become): - Petr je zkušený lékař. (Petr is an experienced doctor). - Moje sestra je velmi milá.* (My sister is very kind).

Morphological Endings in Singular and Plural: - Masculine Animate: Sg. zero consonant / -a / -e (pán, předseda, soudce); Pl. -i, -ové, -é (páni, předsedové, lékaři). - Masculine Inanimate: Sg. zero consonant (hrad, stroj); Pl. -y, -e (hrady, stroje). - Feminine: Sg. -a, -e/-ě, zero (žena, růže, píseň); Pl. -y, -e, -i (ženy, růže, písně, kosti). - Neuter: Sg. -o, -e/-ě, -í (město, moře, nádraží); Pl. -a, -e, -í (města, moře, nádraží).
