The Locative Case (6. pád) in Czech

The *Locative Case (6. pád – Lokál) is unique among Czech cases in that it is strictly prepositional—it can never be used as a bare noun phrase without an accompanying preposition. It answers O kom? (About whom?) and O čem? (About what?), as well as spatial Kde? (Where?*).

The 5 Governing Prepositions: 1. v / ve (in, inside closed spaces, towns, countries): v Praze (in Prague), ve škole (at school), v hotelu (in the hotel). 2. na (on open surfaces, islands, institutions): na stole (on the table), na univerzitě (at the university), na poště (at the post office). 3. o (about a topic or person): Mluvíme o novém filmu / o české historii (We are talking about the new film / Czech history). 4. po (along, around, after in time): procházka po městě (walk around the city), po obědě (after lunch). 5. při (during, at the time of, by): při práci (during work), při zkoušce (during the exam).

Key Singular Endings: - Masculine: Inanimates take -e/-ě with palatalization (hrad → na hradě, les → v lese) or -u (v hotelu, v pokoji); Animates take -ovi (o bratrovi). - Feminine: -e/-ě (v Praze, na univerzitě, v knize with k → c, h → z) or -i (v ulici, na stanici). - Neuter: -e/-ě (v městě / ve městě), -u (v autu / v autě), -i (v moři), -í (na nádraží).
