The Past Tense (Minulý čas) in Czech

Past Tense (Minulý čas: l-participle + jsem/jsi/jsme/jste)

Formed by combining the past active l-participle (dělal, dělala, dělalo) with the present auxiliary of být (jsem, jsi, jsme, jste), with 3rd person dropping the auxiliary.

The *Past Tense (Minulý čas) in Czech is a compound tense constructed using the historical Slavic active past participle in -l (l-ové příčestí) combined with the unstressed present auxiliary of být (to be*):

Past Participle (-l, -la, -lo, -li, -ly, -la) + Auxiliary Clitic (jsem, jsi, jsme, jste)

*Conjugation Paradigm (dělat = to do): - 1st sg.: já jsem dělal / dělala or dělal/dělala jsem (I did) - 2nd sg.: ty jsi dělal / dělala or colloquially merged dělals / dělalas (you did) - 3rd sg. (NO AUXILIARY): on dělal, ona dělala, ono dělalo (he/she/it did — the auxiliary je is strictly omitted!) - 1st pl.: my jsme dělali / dělaly or dělali jsme (we did) - 2nd pl.: vy jste dělali / dělaly or dělali jste (you did) - 3rd pl. (NO AUXILIARY): oni dělali (masc. anim.), ony dělaly (fem./inanim.), ona dělala* (neuter).

Strict Auxiliary Placement: The auxiliary (jsem, jsi, jsme, jste) is a 2nd-position clitic and must attach to the second syntactic position in the clause: Včera jsem studoval v knihovně (Yesterday I studied in the library).

Examples

Včera dopoledne jsme navštívili slavnou historickou galerii v centru města.

Yesterday morning we visited the famous historical gallery in the city center.

Byl jsem velmi překvapen vysokou úrovní této mezinárodní konference.

I was very surprised by the high standard of this international conference.

Naši studenti včera úspěšně napsali závěrečný test z české gramatiky.

Our students yesterday successfully wrote the final test in Czech grammar.

Kde jsi koupil tento krásný dřevěný nábytek do obývacího pokoje?
