Prepositions Governing Genitive & Accusative in Czech
Prepositions with Genitive and Accusative
Primary spatial and directional prepositions: do, od, z, bez, u govern Genitive, while pro, přes, and directional na, v govern Accusative.
In Czech, prepositions are strictly case-governing morphemes. Mastering which prepositions trigger the Genitive (2. pád) versus the Accusative (4. pád) is a crucial foundational skill:
1. Primary Prepositions with the Genitive (2. pád): - do (to/into a closed building or city): Jdu do školy / do Prahy. - od (from a person or starting point): Dopis od kamaráda. - z / ze (out of/from a place or material): Jedu z práce / stůl ze dřeva. - bez (without): Káva bez mléka a cukru. - u (near / at someone's place): Bydlím u nádraží / Jsem u lékaře. - vedle (next to), blízko (near), během (during): Během přednášky.
2. Primary Prepositions with the Accusative (4. pád): - pro (for the benefit of): Dárek pro maminku. - přes (across / through / despite): Jdeme přes Karlův most / přes týden. - za (in exchange for / in favor of): Koupil to za sto korun.
3. Two-Way Directional Prepositions (Where to? → Accusative): Prepositions na (on/to) and v (in) take the Accusative when answering 'Kam?' (Where to? Movement towards destination), but the Locative when answering 'Kde?' (Static Location): - Direction (Accusative): Jdu na univerzitu / na poštu. - Static (Locative): Jsem na univerzitě / na poště.
