Vowel Alternations and Quantity Shifts (kůň/koně, dům/domu)

Czech inflection features regular stem vowel length and quality alternations: ů alternates with o (dům → domu, stůl → stolu) and á/í shorten to a/i.

In Czech historical morphology, *Vowel Alternations (Hláskové alternace a krácení/dloužení vokalů)* occur systematically across noun declension, adjective comparison, and verb conjugation.

1. The ů ↔ o Quantitative Alternation: Whenever a monosyllabic closed syllable containing ring ů becomes open through suffixation, ů regularly alternates with short o: - dům (house) → Gen. domu, Pl. domy - stůl (table) → Gen. stolu, Pl. stoly - kůň (horse) → Gen. ko, Pl. ko - nůž (knife) → Gen. nože, Pl. nože - bůh (god) → Gen. boha.

2. Vowel Shortening in Genitive Plural & Derivatives: - Long á → a: práce (work) → Gen. pl. pra; vránavran - Long í / ý → i / y: chvíle (moment) → chvil; lípalip - Diphthong ou → u: mouka (flour) → muk.

*3. Consonant Palatalization Alternations (Přehlásky): - k → c: Ček → Čeci, ruka → ruce - h → z: Praha → v Praze, kniha → v knize - ch → š: Čech → Češi, moucha → mouše - r → ř: doktor → doktoři, sestra → sestře*.
