Adverbs ending in "-mente"

adverbios en -mente

Adverbs formed by adding the suffix "-mente" to the feminine singular form of adjectives.

Adverbs ending in -mente are the most common way to form manner adverbs in Spanish, corresponding to the English suffix "-ly". They describe how an action is performed. The morphological process of their creation is highly regular.

To form an adverb in -mente, take the singular feminine form of the adjective and attach the suffix -mente directly to it. For example, rápido -> rápida -> rápidamente (quickly), feliz -> felizmente (happily). A key spelling rule is that the original written accent (tilde) of the adjective must be preserved in the adverb (e.g., fácil retains the accent in fácilmente).

A very specific rule applies when using two or more of these adverbs consecutively: only the final adverb takes the -mente suffix, while the preceding adverbs are kept in their feminine singular adjective forms (e.g., lenta y silenciosamente - slowly and silently). A common mistake is adding -mente to every adverb in a series (e.g., saying lentamente y silenciosamente), which sounds repetitive and is grammatically incorrect in standard Spanish.
