The Japanese Copula "desu" and "da"
です / だ
The copula equivalent to "to be", used to state facts in polite (desu) and plain (da) forms.
The words です (desu) and だ (da) function as the copula in Japanese, equivalent to "to be" (am/is/are) in English. They link a subject to a noun or adjective to state a fact (e.g., "Kore wa hon desu" - This is a book).
The choice between desu and da depends entirely on politeness. です is used in polite speech (teineigo), suitable for conversations with strangers, superiors, or in public settings. だ is the plain/casual form used with friends, family, or in written essays. Unlike English verbs, the Japanese copula does not conjugate based on person or number, but it does conjugate for tense (desu -> deshita) and polarity (desu -> dewa arimasen).
