Conjunctions of Cause: "kara" and "node"
から / ので
Conjunctions meaning "because" or "since", differing in politeness, subjectivity, and tone.
The conjunctions から (kara) and ので (node) are used to link a cause/reason to an effect, translating as "because" or "since." Although they look similar, they carry distinct nuances in subjectivity and politeness. Using the wrong one can make your statement sound impolite or overly defensive.
から is subjective and emphasizes the speaker's opinion, excuse, or will. It is commonly used with commands, requests, and suggestions (e.g., abunai kara sawaru na - don't touch because it's dangerous). ので is objective and polite, presenting the cause as a natural fact or external circumstance. It is the preferred choice when making polite excuses or apologies to superiors (e.g., osoku natta node sumimasen - excuse me for being late).
Learners commonly make mistakes by using から when apologizing to a boss or customer (e.g., saying jiko ga atta kara okuremashita, which sounds like a defensive excuse). In such situations, ので must be used (jiko ga atta node okuremashita). Another error is using the copula だ (da) before ので; instead, you must use な (na) when connecting a na-adjective or noun to node (e.g., ame na node, not ame da node).
