Purpose and Reason: "tame ni"
ために
A grammar structure indicating purpose ("in order to") or cause/reason ("because of").
The phrase ために (tame ni) is used in Japanese to express two main relations depending on context: purpose (aiming for an outcome) and reason (due to a fact). When indicating purpose, it translates as "for the sake of" or "in order to." When expressing cause or reason, it behaves as a formal "because of" or "owing to."
To express purpose, attach ために to a verb in its dictionary (plain present) form (e.g., nihongo wo manabu tame ni - in order to learn Japanese) or to a noun + の (e.g., kazoku no tame ni - for the sake of my family). To express cause or reason (usually in formal writing), attach it to a past tense verb or an i-adjective (e.g., yuki ga futta tame ni - due to the snow having fallen). The subject of the clause before tame ni is marked by が.
A common mistake for learners is using ために for purpose when the preceding verb is potential or involuntary (e.g., expressing "in order to be able to do"). For potential or involuntary verbs, you must use ように (you ni) instead (e.g., dekiru you ni instead of dekiru tame ni). Another mistake is confusing the particle の requirement when connecting nouns.
