Ablative Case (-дан/-ден, -тан/-тен, -нан/-нен)
The ablative case (-дан/-ден, -тан/-тен, -нан/-нен) denotes movement from/out of a place, point of origin, cause, material, and comparison.
The Kazakh *Ablative Case (Шығыс септік) marks the starting point of motion, origin, source of information, cause/reason, material of composition, and the standard of comparison. It answers Кімнен? (From whom?), Неден? (From/out of what?), Қайдан? (From where?), and Неліктен?* (Why / from what cause?).
Suffix Variations (6 allomorphs): 1. -дан / -ден: Attached after vowels (а, е, ы, і), voiced consonants (ж, з), and the sonorants р, л, й, у: - қаладан* (from the city), үйден (from home), ауылдан (from the village), көлден (from the lake). 2. -тан / -тен: Attached after all voiceless consonants (к, қ, п, с, т, ш, ф, х): - мектептен (from school), кітаптан (from the book), жұмыстан (from work). 3. -нан / -нен: Attached after the nasal sonorants м, н, ң and after 3rd person possessive suffixes (-ы/-і/-сы/-сі): - орманнан (from the forest), адамнан (from the person), үйінен (from his house), баласынан* (from his child).
Comparative Role: When comparing two entities in Kazakh, the standard of comparison takes the ablative: Асқар Айдардан үлкен (Asqar is older than Aidar). It is also governed by postpositions like кейін (after) and бұрын (before): сабақтан кейін (after the lesson).
