Dative Case in Kazakh (-ға/-ге, -қа/-ке, -на/-не)
Dative Case (-ға/-ге, -қа/-ке, -на/-не)
The dative case indicates direction (where to), recipient (to whom), purpose, and governs verbs of motion, giving, and looking.
The Kazakh *Dative Case (Барыс септік) encodes destination, direction of movement, beneficiary/recipient, and temporal deadlines. It answers Кімге? (To whom?), Неге? (To/for what?), and Қайда?* (Where to?).
Suffix Allomorphs: 1. -ға / -ге: Attached after vowels, voiced consonants (ж, з), and sonorants (р, л, й, у, м, н, ң): - қала → қалаға* (to the city), үй → үйге (to home), дос → дос*қа (after voiceless), ауыл → ауылға. 2. -қа / -ке: Attached after all voiceless consonants (к, қ, п, с, т, ш, ф, х*): - мектеп → мектепке (to school), сабақ → сабаққа (to the lesson), Алматы → Алматыға. 3. -на / -не: Attached specifically after 3rd person possessive suffixes (-ы/-і/-сы/-сі): - үйі (his house) → үйіне (to his house); баласы → баласына (to his child). 4. Personal Pronouns: Irregular stems: мен → маған (to me), сен → саған (to you), ол → оған* (to him/her).
Many essential Kazakh verbs govern the dative: бару (to go to), айту (to tell to), беру (to give to), қарау (to look at), көмектесу (to help — маған көмектес), сену (to believe).
