Accusative Case in Kazakh (-ны/-ні, -ды/-ді, -ты/-ті, -н)
Accusative Case (-ны/-ні, -ды/-ді, -ты/-ті, -н)
The accusative case (-ны/-ні, -ды/-ді, -ты/-ті, -н) marks definite and specific direct objects (Кімді? Нені?).
The Kazakh *Accusative Case (Табыс септік) marks the definite direct object of a transitive verb. It answers the questions Кімді? (Whom?) and Нені?* (What specific thing?).
Suffix Variations (7 allomorphs): 1. -ны / -ні: Attached after vowels (а, е, ы, і, о, ө, ұ, ү): қаланы* (the city), теңіз*ді (after з) / кемені* (the ship), ананы (the mother). 2. -ды / -ді: Attached after the sonorants л, р, й, у, м, н, ң and voiced ж, з: - ауылды (the village), үйді (the house), қызды (the girl), көлді (the lake). 3. -ты / -ті: Attached after all voiceless consonants (к, қ, п, с, т, ш, ф, х): - кітапты (the book), мектепті (the school), хатты (the letter). 4. -н: Attached specifically after 3rd person possessive suffixes (-ы/-і/-сы/-сі): - кітабы (his book) → кітабын (his book, acc.); анасы → анасын*.
Definite vs. Indefinite Objects: If an object is generic or non-specific, it remains in the unmarked nominative: Мен алма жедім (I ate an apple / apples). But if the object is specific, proper, demonstrative, or possessive, the accusative suffix is mandatory: Мен мына алманы жедім (I ate this apple), Айдарды көрдім (I saw Aidar).
