Question Particles (ма/ме, ба/бе, па/пе) in Kazakh

In Kazakh, polar (yes/no) questions are formed by appending the *Question Particle (сұраулық шылау) to the very end of the predicate. Unlike in Turkish where question particles are conjugated with personal endings (geliyor musun?), in Kazakh the question particle is written as a separate word, receives no personal endings, and always stands at the clause boundary*.

Phonetic Distribution (6 allomorphs): 1. ма / ме: After vowels (а, е, ы, і), and the sonorants м, н, ң: - Ол студент пе? (after voiceless) / Асқар келді ме? (Did Asqar come? - after vowel і), Сенде қалам бар ма? (Do you have a pen? - after sonorant р takes ба, but сенбі ме). 2. ба / бе: After the sonorants р, л, й, у and voiced consonants ж, з: - Бұл кітап қызық па? (after voiceless) / Сенде бар ма? (exception: after р takes ма/ба), Қар жауды ма? (after ы takes ма), Ол қыз ба? (Is that a girl? - after з). 3. па / пе: After all voiceless consonants (к, қ, п, с, т, ш, ф, х): - Мектеп ашық па? (Is the school open?), Сабақ бітті ме? (Did the lesson end? - after і), Сен түсіндің бе? (after ң takes бе/ме).

Question Word Constraint: Question particles must never be used in sentences containing specific question words (кім, не, қайда, қашан, неге). A sentence like Сен қайда барасың ба? is ungrammatical; the correct form is Сен қайда барасың?.
