Negation in Kazakh (-ма/-ме/-ба/-бе/-па/-пе and емес)
Negation (-ма/-ме and емес)
Kazakh negates verbs with the suffix -ма/-ме (-ба/-бе, -па/-пе) and nominals/adjectives with the negative particle емес.
In Kazakh, negation is bifurcated based on part of speech into Verbal Negation (morphological suffixes) and Nominal Negation (the analytic negative copula particle емес):
1. Verbal Negation (-ма/-ме, -ба/-бе, -па/-пе): Inserted directly after the verb root and before any tense or aspect markers: - жаз (write) → жазба* (do not write), жазбады (he did not write), жазбайды (he does not write). - кел (come) → келме (do not come), келмеді (he did not come). - айт (say) → айтпа (do not say), айтпады (he did not say). 2. Nominal and Adjectival Negation (емес): Corresponds to English 'is not' or Turkish 'değil'. It follows predicate nouns, adjectives, or pronouns and takes the personal predicative endings: - Мен студент емеспін (I am not a student). - Бұл кітап қызық емес (This book is not interesting). - Ол дәрігер емес (He is not a doctor). - Біз шаршаған емеспіз* (We are not tired).
Learners must strictly avoid mixing the two systems: saying жаз емес instead of жазбады is a fundamental grammatical error.
