Possessive Suffixes
Possessive suffixes attach to the possessed noun to indicate the person and number of the owner (-ым/-ім, -ың/-ің, -ыңыз/-іңіз, -ы/-і/-сы/-сі).
In Kazakh, possession is expressed morphologically by attaching *Possessive Suffixes (тәуелдік жалғаулары) directly to the possessed noun. Possessive pronouns in the genitive case (менің, сенің, сіздің, оның*) can optionally precede the noun for added emphasis.
Suffix Paradigm: 1. 1st Person Singular ('my'): -ым / -ім (after consonants) or -м (after vowels): - дос → досым* (my friend), үй → үйім (my house), ана → анам (my mother). 2. 2nd Person Singular Informal ('your'): -ың / -ің (cons.) or -ң (vowel): - досың, үйің, анаң. 3. 2nd Person Singular Polite ('your'): -ыңыз / -іңіз (cons.) or -ңыз / -ңіз (vowel): - досыңыз, үйіңіз, анаңыз. 4. 3rd Person Singular/Plural ('his / her / their'): -ы / -і (after consonants) or -сы / -сі (after vowels): - досы (his friend), үйі (his house), баласы (his child), әкесі* (his father).
Plural Owners: 1st plur. takes -(ы)мыз / -(і)міз (үйіміз = our house), 2nd plur. informal takes -(ы)ңдар / -(і)ңдер (үйлерің), 2nd plur. polite takes -(ы)ңыздар / -(і)ңіздер (үйлеріңіз).
Stem-final voiceless stops soften when followed by possessive suffixes: сабақ → сабағым, кітап → кітабым.
