Possessive-Case Stacking and Suffix Harmony
Kazakh strictly orders nominal suffixes: Root + Plural (-лар) + Possessive (-ым) + Case (-да) with special 3rd-person buffer forms (-нда, -на, -нан, -н).
In Kazakh nominal morphology, inflectional suffixes attach in a strictly immutable structural hierarchy:
Noun Stem → Plural (-лар) → Possessive (-ым/-іміз) → Case Ending (-да/-ға/-дан)
For example: үй (house) → үй-лер (houses) → үй-лер-іміз (our houses) → үй-лер-іміз-де (in our houses) → үй-лер-іміз-ден (from our houses).
Crucial 3rd Person Morpheme Alternations: When case suffixes attach after the 3rd Person Possessive suffix (-ы/-і/-сы/-сі), historical sound shifts trigger unique, dedicated 3rd-person allomorphs that include an epenthetic nasal н: - Dative: takes -на / -не (үйіне* = to his house, баласына = to his child, NOT үйіге). - Locative: takes -нда / -нде (үйінде = in his house, қаласында = in his city, NOT үйіде). - Ablative: takes -нан / -нен (үйінен = from his house, досынан = from his friend, NOT үйіден). - Accusative: takes pure -н (үйін = his house, acc., кітабын = his book, acc., NOT үйіні*).
Confusing 3rd-person case forms (e.g. erroneously saying үйіге instead of үйіне) is one of the most glaring learner errors in Kazakh.
