The conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający) in Polish is used to describe hypothetical scenarios, express wishes, formulate polite requests, or ask conditional questions. It is characterized by the use of the particle 'by' combined with the past tense form of the verb. In Polish, this particle fuses directly with the verb in the first and second person singular and plural.

For example, to form the conditional in the first person singular masculine for the verb 'robić', you take the past tense 'robiłem' and append 'by', resulting in 'robiłbym' (I would do). For the feminine form, it is 'robiłabym'. In the third person (singular and plural), the particle 'by' remains a separate word and is placed after the verb (e.g., 'on robiłby', 'oni robiliby'). Polish word order is flexible, so 'by' can sometimes detach and move towards the beginning of the clause, especially after conjunctions like 'gdyby' (if only) or 'żeby' (in order to).
