Conditional Sentences in Polish
zdania warunkowe
Polish sentence structures expressing real, hypothetical, or unreal conditions using the particle "by".
Conditional sentences in Polish (zdania warunkowe) are used to state that an action depends on a certain condition. Polish grammar distinguishes between real conditions (where the outcome is possible in the present or future) and hypothetical or unreal conditions (where the outcome is unlikely or impossible, including past regrets).
For real conditions, use standard tenses with conjunctions like jeśli, jeżeli, or gdy (e.g., jeśli jutro będzie ładna pogoda, pójdziemy na spacer). For hypothetical or unreal conditions, you must attach the conditional particle by to the conjunction (forming gdyby or jeśliby) and conjugate the verbs in the past tense with the conditional suffix -by- (e.g., gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym).
Learners frequently make mistakes by misplacing or omitting the particle by (e.g., saying gdy mam czas, poszedłbym instead of gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym). Another common error is using incorrect personal endings attached to gdyby (e.g., writing gdyby ja miał instead of the correct inflected form gdybym miał). Note that the personal markers (like -m for first person singular) attach directly to gdyby.
