Reported Speech in Polish (Mowa Zależna)
mowa zależna
The sentence structures used to report statements, questions, or commands in Polish.
Reported speech in Polish (mowa zależna) is used to relay what someone else said without repeating their words verbatim. Unlike in English or Spanish, Polish does not have a strict grammatical tense-shifting rule (sequence of tenses) when the introducing verb is in the past. The tense of the original statement is preserved relative to the moment of speaking.
To report a statement, connect the reporting verb to the reported clause using the conjunction że or iż (e.g., powiedział, że...). If reporting a question, use the particle czy for yes/no questions (e.g., zapytał, czy...) or preserve the original question word like kto, gdzie. When reporting commands or requests, use conjunctions like żeby, aby, or by combined with past tense verb forms (e.g., kazał, żebyśmy poszli).
Learners fluent in English or Spanish often make the mistake of shifting tenses into the past (e.g., saying powiedział, że był głodny when they mean "he said he was hungry [at that moment]," which grammatically translates to "he said he had been hungry before"). In Polish, the correct phrase is powiedział, że jest głodny (present tense). Another common error is using że instead of czy when reporting indirect questions (e.g., saying zapytał, że pójdziesz instead of zapytał, czy pójdziesz).
