Interrogative Pronouns in Polish

zaimki pytające

Pronouns used to ask questions, which inflect for gender, number, and grammatical case.

Interrogative pronouns in Polish (zaimki pytające) are words used to formulate questions about people, things, properties, or locations. Common examples include kto (who), co (what), jaki (what kind of), który (which), and czyj (whose). Unlike in English, these pronouns must be fully inflected to match the grammatical role they play in the sentence.

Kto and co only decline for case (e.g., kogo, czemu, kim, czym). Pronouns like jaki, który, and czyj behave like adjectives, meaning they must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they modify (e.g., jaka książka - nominative feminine, o którym chłopcu - locative masculine). This adjectival inflection is crucial for syntactical harmony.

A common mistake for learners is using the nominative form kto or co regardless of the verb's preposition or government (e.g., saying O kto rozmawiasz? instead of O kim rozmawiasz? - Who are you talking about?). Another error is confusing jaki (asking about a quality or characteristic) with który (asking to choose from a defined group), a distinction similar to "what kind of" vs. "which".
