Subjunctive Mood (Modul Conjunctiv: să)
Marked by the invariant particle să, the subjunctive expresses desires, obligations, possibilities, and replaces the infinitive after modal verbs (vreau să merg).
The *Subjunctive Mood (Modul Conjunctiv)* is one of the most prominent, frequently utilized verbal moods in Romanian. Unlike Western Romance languages that restrict the subjunctive to subordinate clauses of doubt or emotion, Romanian uses the subjunctive ubiquitously where other languages require an infinitive.
Structure and Conjugation: The subjunctive is universally introduced by the invariant subjunctive conjunction să (that / to): - In the 1st person singular, 2nd person singular, 1st person plural, and 2nd person plural, the verb forms are identical to the Present Indicative: - eu să cânt (that I sing / for me to sing) - tu să cânți - noi să cântăm - voi să cântați. - Crucial 3rd Person Morphological Shift: In the 3rd person (singular and plural), the verb undergoes an obligatory vowel flip: - Verbs with indicative -ă / -ează take subjunctive -e / -eze: el cântă → el să cânte*; el lucrează → el să lucreze. - Verbs with indicative -e / -ește take subjunctive -ă / -ească: el merge → el să meargă; el citește → el să citească; el face → el să facă*.
Subjunctive of 'a fi' (to be): eu să fiu, tu să fii, el să fie, noi să fim, voi să fiți, ei să fie.
Typical Uses: 1. After verbs of desire, intention, order: Vreau să merg* (I want to go), Trebuie să plecăm (We must leave). 2. Impersonal expressions: Este important să știi* (It is important to know).
