Negation & Double Negation in Romanian
Verbal Negation and Double Negation (nu, niciodată, nimic)
Standard negation places nu directly before the verb/clitics, and negative pronouns (nimeni, nimic, niciodată) obligatorily require double negation with nu.
In Romanian, basic clause negation is achieved by placing the negative particle nu (not) immediately before the conjugated finite verb or before any preceding clitic pronoun clusters: - Simple: Eu nu știu (I do not know). - With clitics: Eu nu îl cunosc (I do not know him), El nu mi-a spus (He did not tell me). - Phonological reduction: Before vowel-initial auxiliary verbs in informal speech, nu can elide with a hyphen: n-am văzut (I haven't seen), n-are timp (he doesn't have time).
*Strict Double Negation Rule (Dubla negație): Like Slavic languages and Spanish, but unlike Standard English, Romanian syntax strictly mandates double or multiple negation. Any clause containing a negative pronoun or adverb must also contain the verbal negator nu: - nimeni (nobody): Nimeni nu a venit (Nobody came, lit. 'Nobody not came'). - nimic (nothing): Eu nu am văzut nimic (I saw nothing). - niciodată (never): Noi nu întârziem niciodată (We never arrive late). - nicăieri (nowhere): El nu merge nicăieri (He is going nowhere). - nici... nici... (neither... nor...): Nici Mihai, nici Andrei nu știu răspunsul* (Neither Mihai nor Andrei knows the answer).
Omitting nu when a negative pronoun is present (Nimeni a venit) is completely ungrammatical in Romanian.

We did not hear anything suspicious during last night.
Mihai nu întârzie niciodată la ședințele importante de la birou.
Mihai never arrives late to important meetings at the office.
Nici ploaia rece, nici vântul puternic nu i-au oprit pe drumeți.
Neither the cold rain nor the strong wind stopped the hikers.
