Indefinite & Negative Pronouns in Romanian

Indefinite and Negative Pronouns (cineva, nimeni, ceva, nimic)

Indefinite pronouns are formed with suffix -va (cineva, ceva, undeva) or oricine/orice, while negatives use nimeni and nimic requiring double negation.

Romanian organizes its system of non-specific reference through transparent morphological series of *Indefinite (pronume nehotărâte) and Negative (pronume negative)* pronouns:

1. The Specific Indefinite Series with '-va' (Somebody / Something): Formed by appending the enclitic particle -va to interrogative stems: - cineva (someone / somebody) - ceva (something) - undeva (somewhere) - cândva (sometime / once) - cumva (somehow / by any chance) - câtva / câțiva / câteva (a few / some amount: câteva cărți = a few books).

2. The Universal / Free-Choice Series with 'ori-' (Any / Whoever): - oricine (anyone / whoever) - orice (anything / whatever) - oriunde (anywhere) - oricând (anytime). - fiecare (each / every: fiecare student = each student).

3. The Negative Pronoun Series (Nobody / Nothing): - nimeni (nobody / no one) → Oblique form: nimănui (to nobody) - nimic (nothing) - niciunul / niciuna (none / neither of them). All negative pronouns strictly require double negation with the verbal particle nu (Nimeni nu știe = Nobody knows; Nu am văzut pe nimeni** = I saw nobody).
