Direct Object Clitic Pronouns (mă, te, îl, o, ne, vă, îi, le)

Unstressed direct object pronouns (mă, te, îl, o, ne, vă, îi, le) precede finite verbs, attaching with hyphens before vowels (l-am văzut, i-am văzut).

In Romanian, direct objects represented by pronouns regularly take *Unstressed Clitic Forms (formele neaccentuate în acuzativ)* placed immediately before the finite verb:

Complete Clitic Paradigm: - 1st sg.: mă (me) → elides as m- before vowels (Mă vezi? / M-a văzut = He saw me) - 2nd sg.: te (you) → elides as te- / t- (Te cunosc / Te-am văzut) - 3rd sg. masc./neut.: îl (him/it) → elides as l- (Îl cunosc / L-am văzut) - 3rd sg. fem.: o (her/it) → remains o before present verbs, but placed after the past participle in compound past: O cunosc (I know her) vs. Am văzut-o (I have seen her!) - 1st pl.: ne* (us) → Ne ajută / Ne-a ajutat - 2nd pl.: vă (you all) → elides as v- (Vă respect / V-am auzit) - 3rd pl. masc./neut.: îi (them masc.) → elides as i- (Îi văd / I-am văzut) - 3rd pl. fem./neut.: le (them fem.) → Le cunosc / Le-am văzut*.

Crucial Irregularity of 'o' in the Past Tense: While all other clitics precede the auxiliary (L-am văzut, I-am văzut), the feminine 3rd person singular clitic o is encliticized to the past participle: Am văzut-o* (I saw her), Am citit-o* (I read it).
