Relative Pronouns & Relative Clauses in Romanian

In Romanian, relative clauses are introduced primarily by the versatile relative pronoun care (who, which, that). Its form changes strictly depending on its syntactic role inside the subordinate clause:

1. Subject Role (Nominative: 'care'): When functioning as the subject of the relative clause, care is uninflected for gender/number: - Omul care a venit ieri este profesor (The man who came yesterday is a professor). - Cărțile care sunt pe masă (The books that are on the table).

2. Direct Object Role (Accusative: 'pe care' + Mandatory Clitic Doubling): When care represents a direct object, it obligatorily takes the preposition 'pe' and MUST be doubled by an accusative clitic pronoun matching the antecedent in gender/number: - Cartea pe care am citit-o* (The book which I read, lit. 'The book PE which I-read-it'). Omitting pe or the clitic (Cartea care am citit) is a pervasive grammatical error! - Băiatul pe care l-am văzut (The boy whom I saw). - Oamenii pe care i-am întâlnit* (The people whom I met).

3. Genitive/Dative Oblique Forms ('căruia / căreia / cărora'): - Masc./Neuter Singular: căruia (prietenul căruia i-am dat cartea = the friend to whom I gave the book; autorul a cărui operă...) - Feminine Singular: căreia (fata căreia i-am scris = the girl to whom I wrote) - Plural (All Genders): cărora (studenții cărora le-am explicat = the students to whom I explained).
