The Oblique Genitive-Dative Case in Romanian

Romanian is the only modern Romance language that preserves a synthetic case system. In its nominal declension, the historical Latin Genitive (possession: whose?) and Dative (indirect object: to whom?) have merged into a single morphological *Oblique Case (cazul genitiv-dativ)*.

Remarkably, case in Romanian is marked on the article, rather than through extensive noun root alterations:

*1. Definite Oblique Endings (Articol hotărât): - Masculine & Neuter Singular: -lui added to the noun (băiat → băiatului = to the boy / of the boy; tren → trenului = of the train). - Feminine Singular: Feminine nouns change to their plural stem and take -ei: fată (pl. fete) → fetei (to the girl / of the girl); casă (pl. case) → casei; carte (pl. cărți) → cărții. - Plural (All Genders): -lor: băieților (of/to the boys), fetelor (of/to the girls), trenurilor* (of/to the trains).

*2. Indefinite Oblique Forms (Articol nehotărât): - Masc./Neuter sg.: unui (unui băiat = to a boy / of a boy). - Feminine sg.: unei + plural stem (unei fete = to a girl / of a girl). - Plural all genders: unor (unor studenți* = to some students).

Proper masculine names take the proclitic particle lui placed before the name (cartea lui Mihai = Mihai's book).
