In stark contrast to Spanish (el/la), French (le/la), and Italian (il/la), Romanian attaches the *Definite Article (articolul hotărât) directly onto the end of the noun as a morphological suffix (an enclitic article*, a Balkan sprachbund areal feature shared with Bulgarian and Albanian).

Suffixation Patterns by Gender and Number: 1. Masculine Singular: - Consonant-final roots add -ul: băiat → băiatul* (the boy), lup → lupul (the wolf), om → omul (the man). - Roots ending in -e add -le: frate → fratele (the brother), câine → câinele (the dog). 2.
